We made short work of the items within Avery’s car, which I found out during the mini-move was in Pearl’s name, so in essence belonged to me. Avery explained how he didn’t want any ties to his old life and had no problems driving around in a “company” car.

“But what about your taxes?” I asked as we locked up the garage and all but ran to the house.

Avery shrugged. “What about them?”

Oh boy.

“Surely, you’re worried about an audit?” I asked my brain pounced on another question. “In fact, how did you open up a bank account if you’re in hiding?”

Avery grinned and I glimpsed a slice of the young man he used to be. “I know a guy.”

“What does that even mean?”

Avery reached into his wallet and pulled out a driver’s license. The name “Avery X Daniels” emblazoned on the front.

“How did he get you such a good looking fake?”

Avery took the license back and replaced it in his wallet. “That’s a certified license. The paperwork that I used to procure it, now those were quality.”

I shook my head. Some people.

We were standing inside the mud room, Avery’s clothing and other personal items draped across the breakfast table in the next room.

“What room do you want?” I asked.

“I’ve always been partial to the Orchid Room,” he replied.

I nodded, remembering the room from my sweep the day before. It was the one across the hall from the room Nicole had used.

“Hey, Ave…” I began as we walked deeper into the house to pick up his clothing. “Tell me everything you know about Nicole.”

“Nothing much, truth be told. In fact, she was hired almost immediately just like I was. Once Doctor Barnes vouched for her, she was a shoe-in.”

I stopped, my hands full of pressed collared shirts and slacks. “Doctor Barnes? What does he have to do with Nicole?”

“He’s the one who recommended Nicole for the job. He was coming around so often, once or twice a week, and I mentioned in passing that I’d been trying to have Pearl hire a housekeeper. A few days later, she showed up and that was that. We had a housekeeper.”

I frowned at Avery’s retreating back while I digested that information.

“How do they know each other? The doctor and Nicole, I mean?” I asked as I picked up my pace to catch up.

“I didn’t ask,” he said as he ascended the stairwell.

Once we reached the second floor, the Orchid Room was only a few steps away and I plopped down the fabric pile onto the well-made bed.

“Dr. Barnes and Sheriff Williams are trying to cover up the murder,” I said without preamble.

Avery looked over his shoulder, doubt written all over his face. He opened up a spacious closet door to begin assembling his temporary room. “That sounds a little far-fetched, if you don’t mind me saying so.”

I plopped down on the bed while I watched him fill the cedar hangers with articles of clothing. “I found out from Mary that Doctor Barnes was trying to weasel his way into Pearl’s good graces.
